The second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland, Krakow has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural and artistic life. In 1978 the entire Old Town was approved by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Famed for it`s many architectural monuments and a unique friendly atmosphere, it is a very compact city, the centre of which, depending on your level of fitness, can be seen without needing any transport. The ideal walk will follow the `Royal Route` path through the Old Town from St Florian`s Gate, through the Rynek Glowny down to Wawel Castle on the banks of the Vistula River. Boat cruises are a popular offering from here in the summer months The `Planty` is a large park surrounding the Old Town and is a popular spot for `people watching` as well as being a passage through to the quaint Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz - scene of much of the film Schindler`s List. The two most popular day trips are to Wieliczka Salt Mine and of course, the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. For shopaholics the city now houses a modern shopping centre, Galeria Krakowska as well as the traditional craft shops along the Royal Route. Cold (but particularly attractive) in the snow covered winter months, Krakow is truly a year round citybreak destination.
